This tutorial just shows you how to use an FTP client to create and edit a file.

The file that is created is called.access, but you can name it whatever you like.

This article does not specify what should be included in the file.

Make sure to choose your actual file and edit it with whatever material you require when following these instructions.

Creating a file

To log into your server and create a file, do all of the steps listed below.

To use an FTP client to log into your server, go to the FTP overview article.
Check to see if your client is set to show hidden files.

After you’ve logged in, double-check that you’re in the right directory to make the file. In the right pane, you can see the directory. Remote site is the name of the field. The directory in this case is /home/example username/example.com.
Create a new file by right-clicking and selecting Create new file.

A prompt displays, prompting you to type the file’s name. A file called.htaccess is produced in this example. To save, click the OK button.

You can now see that the server has an empty file.

Editing a file

To update an existing file, do all of the procedures listed below.

A window appears, prompting you to select a text editor. You can use a custom editor that you’ve already installed, but the default editor is the simplest option.
Notepad is the software for Windows.

TextEdit is the program to use on a Mac.

Fill in any missing text in the document.

When you’re done, go to File > Save.

A prompt appears on the screen. Select Yes from the drop-down menu.
Your web server’s file has been updated.

Deleting a file

To remove an existing file, follow these steps:

To use an FTP client to log into your server, go to the FTP overview article.
Make sure you’re in the same directory as the file once you’ve logged in.
In the right pane, you can see the directory. It’s called Remote site: and it’s a field.

Choose Delete from the context menu when you right-click the file.

If the FTP client prompts you to confirm the action, such as in the example above, select Yes to remove the file.
