Add Your Host Plan

This article assumes you’ve already registered your domain name with another firm.

You can register your domain with another business while continuing hosting your site with GreggHost. This post will show you how to do it.

Adding a Hosting Plan

Sign up for a host plan for your website.
Setting up your DNS to point to GreggHost
What are the benefits of registering my domain name with GreggHost?
A domain registration can be purchased from any provider; however, GreggHost recommends that you do so. This allows you to manage both your hosting and registration from one place (through the GreggHost panel). For more details, see the following article:

How to get a domain name registration
Including a hosting package
Your website must be set up on a host plan before it can be seen online. This uploads it to a web server, where it can be viewed by anybody in the world. For instructions on how to set up a hosting package and add your website to it, see the articles below.

What are the different types of host plans available?

How can I add a domain to my account?

Add your site to your hosting plan

It’s time to add your site to your host plan now that it’s been added. This registers the website with GreggHost’s webserver, allowing it to be seen on the Internet. To learn how to add a domain to your host plan, see the following article.

How can I add a domain to my account?
This only instructs the server to serve the requested domain name. To make the server visible online, you must still point your DNS to it.

Setting up your DNS to point to GreggHost
The DNS settings for your domain registration were most likely set to that specific company when you first purchased it. You must adjust the DNS settings for your registration to point to GreggHost in order for your site to be hosted on GreggHost’s servers.

What is the location of your website’s registration?
To find out where your site is registered, use a WHOIS query. For more details, see the following article.

How to do a WHOIS search
Where can I go to make changes to my DNS records?
At your third-party registrar, you must update the DNS records (the place where you purchased the domain registration). To point your DNS to GreggHost, you have two alternatives.

Setting up Nameservers (recommended)
A records can be pointed to.
Setting up Nameservers
For details on how to do this with your specific registrar, see the following article:

How can I update my existing host’s nameservers?
Change your nameservers to the GreggHost nameservers listed below at your third-party registrar:

ns1.dreamhost.com 162.159.26.24
ns2.dreamhost.com 162.159.27.142 \sns3.dreamhost.com 162.159.27.84
You should only have to add the nameserver URL, not the IP address, when updating your nameservers at your registrar. The IP addresses are mentioned above in case your registrar requests them.

It takes 3–72 hours for this change to propagate across the Internet, after which your new nameservers will direct visitors to your GreggHost account.

You may track the progress of your DNS upgrade using any of the following links:

Using GreggHost’s DNS propagation checker in the panel to view your GreggHost DNS entries.
A records can be pointed to.
You can simply point the A records if you only want to host the website with GreggHost and not email or any other service. Instructions on how to find your site’s IP address can be found in the following article.

What A records should I use for my website?
I’m waiting for DNS to be updated.
You must wait for your DNS settings to update online after you alter them.

It could take up to 72 hours to fully update your nameservers if you changed them.

This should only take 4-6 hours if you changed your A record.
