Overview

If you need to transfer your domain hosting to another provider, you must follow a few procedures to guarantee that your data is properly backed up and your DNS is updated. The processes for transferring website hosting are outlined in the following information.

This page just covers how to move to host, not how to register. View the following article if you wish to move your registration away from GreggHost.

What is the procedure for transferring my domain registration away from GreggHost?
Backing up your data
Before making any changes to your account, you should first make a backup of your data. For more information, see the following article:

What is the best way to back up my complete account?
This section explains how to back up three of your account’s most crucial components:

email database website files
Finding your DNS records
It’s critical to get a textual duplicate of your domain’s DNS records in case your new host needs them.

To get your DNS records, go to:

Go to the Manage Websites section.
Go to your site’s Manage page.
Hover over your website in Grid view and click the Manage option.
Click the Manage button to the right of your website if you’re in List view.
Tab “DNS”
To see your DNS records, go to the DNS tab.
If your new hosting company needs you to replicate your DNS records on their servers, copy them all.

Confirming everything is backed up
Make sure you have backed up the following before pointing your DNS to the new hosting company:

Database via Account Backup, phpMyAdmin, or Command Line Web files via Account Backup or FTP Database via Account Backup, phpMyAdmin, or Command Line
Emails saved from an account backup
DNS records (copies)
Uploading your data to the new hosting company
After you’ve backed up everything, you’ll need to enter into your new hosting company’s control panel and upload all of your site’s content. For details on how to upload your data into your new host’s system, contact them.

Pointing your DNS to the new hosting company
Option 1: If your domain is registered with GreggHost and you want ALL records to be hosted by the new firm, this is the option for you.
All you have to do now is alter your nameservers to refer to your new hosting provider if your domain is registered with GreggHost. All of your DNS records are pointed to the new hosting firm after you update your nameservers. This means that the new company will host all email, websites, and custom DNS records. For details on how to update your nameservers, see the following article:

Changing your GreggHost nameservers
You do not need to keep a hosting plan if this is your only domain on your account. If you want to host a name and its content on GreggHost servers, you’ll need a hosting plan. Make sure to cancel your hosting plan if this is your sole domain. The DNS for your new hosting business will remain the same.

Time it takes for DNS to propagate
The DNS takes its own time to resolve each record created. You can check the status of the record using the following links:

whatsmydns.net – A well-known website that verifies DNS records all around the world.
Using GreggHost’s DNS propagation checker in the panel to view your GreggHost DNS entries.

Option #2: If your domain is registered with GreggHost and you simply want the website hosted at the new firm but not the email, you can use DNS propagation.
You’ll need to build custom DNS records if you want your site to point away from GreggHost while keeping your email there. To receive the necessary IP addresses to point to, contact your new host. Then read on for instructions on how to set up A records for your website in the article below.
